Sacred Sounds Peru is an archaeo-musicological journey that combines learning and discovery, with the excitement of exploring amazing places and truly ancient cultures. It’s a quest that provides an exceptionally unique opportunity, not only to connect with the ancient past, but to revisit ways and traditions, that have endured for countless generations. This journey promises an incredible experience, one that recognizes and celebrates the timeless creativity and originality of ancient Peru.

Come prepared to time travel through five thousand years of sonorous history, as we move along the Pacific coast and up through the highlands of central Peru. All throughout our journey, visiting world renowned archaeological sites and museums, while sharing time with learned archaeologists and anthropologist. Imagine the finds we will encounter, the ancient corridors and halls we will explore along our way, each having bared witness to the echos of some of our oldest rhythms and sounds.

Beyond the journey itself, this is also a chance to meet and learn from contemporary makers and musicians, and to work with a variety of instruments from the pre-Columbian past of ancient Peru and the Americas. We will make, and learn how, when and why these ancient instruments were used, and all from within the ethos and surroundings of where they actually came to pass. Every discovery bringing you closer to unraveling the mysteries of some of our first musical instruments.

A Truly Transformative Experience

An Archeological Journey into the sights and sounds of the ancient Americas.

This unique adventure, a true journey of discovery, examines some of the Americas first cultural and artistic endeavors through an insightful voyage into the deep past. It offers a unique opportunity to explore the ancient temples and ceremonial centers of the Norte Chico, Casma-Sechin, and Chavin Cultures, with an emphasis on their worldview, musical instruments, and the use of sound in religion, political power, and war.

This pursuit will take us to world renowned archaeological sites including Caral-Supe, Cero Sechin, and Chavin de Huantar, to name a few. It will introduce us to the archeologists and museums, that curate, care for and study these amazing places, while shaping our understanding of these mysterious, and often sophisticated societies.

Throughout our journey we’ll have the opportunity to meet and visit with contemporary artisans, instrument makers and musicians, often in the most genuine of settings. Making and playing traditional instruments is still a big part of communal, and especially rural life in Peru, and it’s here that you will truly come to understand and appreciate this deep-seated, and sincere connection to the past.

It’s these encounters along the way, give us a chance to spend time with people who are rooted in Peru’s musical legacy, and to better understand how these traditions are handed down through the generations. They’re a perfect way to explore these long held traditions, and to learn from a very unique and traditional perspective.

This is a journey designed for people who are looking for a transformative, hands-on learning experience true to the techniques, times and tools of the past. Inspired by ancient makers, who for millennia designed and made their own instruments, and with little more than found objects and natural materials. Ingeniously combining bone, shell, feathers, clay, and reed in ways that will now lead us down our own paths.

Ancient Peru is the perfect time and place to learn more about their discoveries, the feather antara, the Caral bone flute, clay whistle, Tinya drum, and the ancestral rim-blown flute. We too can learn with the same purpose, sounds, and rhythms. Experiencing firsthand the magic found in making these early instruments, and the important role they played in the lives and beliefs of those who came before us.

TRAVEL CONDITIONS AND ALTITUDE

This expedition requires a moderate level of physical activity. There will be walks of 2 or 3 km / 2 miles on uneven surfaces, including stairs and rocky trails at some of the archeological sites. We will be traveling on winding mountain roads, and covering a lot of ground within a wide range of altitudes, from sea level to 4,736 m / 15,535 feet.

The first two days are spent at sea level, Day 3 through Day 6 are around 3,000 m / 9,000 feet, Day 7 crosses the Cordillera Blancas at our highest altitude, and drops back down to around 2,300 m / 7,500 feet for the remainder of the expedition. Please take appropriate measures to make sure you are physically up for travel under these conditions and elevations, before reserving your space.
