handcrafted drums and flutes.

OUR FLUTES
Our Flutes are individually handcrafted — one flute at a time. We work with traditional materials like, bone, tobacco, agave, carizzo and sunflower, as well as two or three sustainable hardwoods. We also use various leathers, ceramics, copper, silver, and shell. We source all we can locally, and believe wholeheartedly in sustainable, and ethical, fair trade.

Our Ancestral flutes are based on four and five hole pre-historic flutes, made in a style little changed over the last 40,000 years. They can be tuned to various standard and exotic scales, including the same notes and intervals used in modern Native American Flutes. And they generally have a broad range of two or more octaves. The American southwest has a long history of flutes and flute players. They have been passed down in oral histories, and depicted in rock art and on ceramics for at least the last fifteen hundred years. Traditional associations to fertility, the warming of the land, and bringing of the rains, serve as testament to the importance of these early flutes both musically and culturally. The emergence of the Native American Flute is one of incredible creativity and innovation. Ever-changing materials, along with the wonderfully inventive techniques used in crafting these flutes, has always been a part of the tradition as a whole. And like many traditions, changing times and ways, have reflected greatly on the evolution of the instrument itself. Get in touch for more info on available Native American flutes.
